New Homebase Owners Bunnings Opens Basildon Warehouse By The End Of This Year

The new store, in Vange, Basildon, is 57,000 square feet and offers more than 30,000 home improvement and garden products as well as paint mixing, key cutting, a garden centre, timber cutting and in-store DIY workshops.

Conversions of the 255 Homebases began this year, with St Albans first and numbers now being accelerated to 15-20 by the end of the year. Kent stores were among the first to be converted. Worle (Weston-super-Mare) is next, with Chichester and Basingstoke are also among planned conversions.

Basildon complex manager Neil Potter said: "All our team members have worked really hard to get the store ready for opening and have undertaken many hours of training to make sure we have the expertise to help customers with home or garden projects."

Another Homebase, in Basildon's Mayflower Retail Park, has closed. Bunnings bought Homebase for £340m in 2016. Latest results from  UK and Ireland in August show a £54m loss for the year ending 30 June 2017. Revenue for the first financial year of Bunnings' ownership was £1.2 billion.

Trading was "affected as Homebase commenced repositioning to its core home improvement and garden offer. Four Bunnings pilots opened by June "with encouraging early performance".The focus is "on strengthening leadership and talent across the business".

The Royal Poinciana, Delonix regia (family Fabaceae), is a tropical or subtropical flowering plant. It is also known by the names Gulmohar, Flamboyant Tree, Peacock Flower, Flame of the Forest, and Flame Tree. (Since this last name is also used for a number of other unrelated trees, its use is not recommended.) The tree is named after Phillipe de Longviliers de Poincy who is credited for introducing the plant to the Americas.

The flowers are large, with four spreading scarlet or orange-red petals up to 8 cm long, and a fifth upright petal called the standard, which is slightly larger and spotted with yellow and white.

The naturally occurring variety flavida has yellow flowers.
Seed pods are dark brown and can be up to 60 cm long and 5 cm wide; the individual seeds, however, are small, weighing around 0.4 g on average.

The compound leaves have a feathery appearance and are a characteristic light, bright green.

They are doubly pinnate: Each leaf is 30-50 cm long and has 20 to 40 pairs of primary leaflets or pinnae on it, and each of these is further divided into 10-20 pairs of secondary leaflets or pinnules.

Nokia Ozo virtual reality camera packs $60K price tag

Nokia is betting the technological wave of virtual reality will be big enough that companies will shell out $60,000 for a camera that can capture immersive views of the world.

The Finnish company of former phone fame unveiled the spherical Ozo camera this summer, but it wasn't until Monday that Nokia gave it a price tag and shipment date of early 2016. The device is designed for making 3D films and games that can be watched, explored and experienced through a virtual-reality headset.

Companies including Facebook, Sony, Google and HTC have been investing heavily in headsets that people wear to experience virtual reality, exploring simulated environments through games or films. Critical to the success of these devices will be abundant, high-quality VR content. That's where the Ozo camera comes in. Creating VR content is demanding and requires specialist equipment to effectively capture the full panorama of a given environment.

Ozo can record stereoscopic 3D video and spatial audio through eight synchronized shutters and integrated microphones. The camera can operate wirelessly and can record video with all the data stored as a single file, or capture it for live broadcast.

Nokia's orb-shaped Ozo isn't the only such camera on the market. Where its effort sports eight cameras and microphones, Google has partnered with GoPro to create the Odyssey, a rig that holds 16 of GoPro's action cams. The Odyssey is part of Google's Jump software and hardware suite, designed to push VR video onto YouTube and to its VR headset, Google Cardboard.

One thing the cameras do have in common is a steep price tag that will keep the devices out of the reach of most consumers for the time being. At $15,000 the Odyssey is cheaper than the Ozo but still comparable to the cost of a compact car. As with all technology, though, virtual reality prices should gradually decrease as the technology becomes more mainstream.

Virtual reality may be a new area for Nokia, but the company hasn't totally given up on making phones after Microsoft bought out its handset business in 2014. In 2016 Nokia will be free to enter the consumer device market once again, though it's said it'll do so by offering design ideas and licensing its brand to other companies that will handle manufacturing, sales and support. It's also hoping to acquire French network equipment maker Alcatel-Lucent and sell its Here mapping technology to German automakers.

Mohammad Fahad Rahman: The Chess Whizz-Kid

Mohammad Fahad Rahman added another achievement to his trophy cabinet on Sunday when the youngest Fide Master of the country emerged as the unbeaten champion in the Under-12 age group of the 6th Swensen Age Group Chess Championship.


The one-day long rating event is a part of the 12th Malaysian Chess Festival which is taking place in Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. The main event began yesterday where Grandmaster Niaz Morshed from Bangladesh is also taking part along with Fahad.


Fahad earned same number of points (5.5) along with three other participants after the end of the six round swiss-league system but in the tie-breaking system Fahad lifted the title with highest Buchhol score to take the gold medal. A total of 126 players from six countries participated in the meet.

In 2013, when he was 10, Fahad became the youngest FIDE Master of Bangladesh after the World Chess Federation, FIDE, awarded the youngster with the title on July 17. He was the 13th Bangladeshi to achieve the FIDE Master title after he completed the criteria of becoming a FM by winning the 14th ASEAN Age-Group Chess Championships held in Chiang Mai, Thailand, in June 2013.


The national junior champion first gained attention in 2011 when he beat the second Bangladeshi GM Ziaur Rahman Zia in a friendly duel in just eight minutes. When he was eight, Fahad was ranked as the top chess player in the World Under-8 Chess rating.


In recent times, Fahad, who hails from Faridpur, became champion in the sub junior chess tournament while he finished runner-up in the junior chess. He also won silver medal in the commonwealth chess this year. Fahad is now placed 12th among the U-12 players in Asia with a rating of 2137.
