Mohammad Fahad Rahman added another achievement to his trophy cabinet on Sunday when the youngest Fide Master of the country emerged as the unbeaten champion in the Under-12 age group of the 6th Swensen Age Group Chess Championship.
The one-day long rating event is a part of the 12th Malaysian Chess Festival which is taking place in Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. The main event began yesterday where Grandmaster Niaz Morshed from Bangladesh is also taking part along with Fahad.
Fahad earned same number of points (5.5) along with three other participants after the end of the six round swiss-league system but in the tie-breaking system Fahad lifted the title with highest Buchhol score to take the gold medal. A total of 126 players from six countries participated in the meet.
In 2013, when he was 10, Fahad became the youngest FIDE Master of Bangladesh after the World Chess Federation, FIDE, awarded the youngster with the title on July 17. He was the 13th Bangladeshi to achieve the FIDE Master title after he completed the criteria of becoming a FM by winning the 14th ASEAN Age-Group Chess Championships held in Chiang Mai, Thailand, in June 2013.
The national junior champion first gained attention in 2011 when he beat the second Bangladeshi GM Ziaur Rahman Zia in a friendly duel in just eight minutes. When he was eight, Fahad was ranked as the top chess player in the World Under-8 Chess rating.
In recent times, Fahad, who hails from Faridpur, became champion in the sub junior chess tournament while he finished runner-up in the junior chess. He also won silver medal in the commonwealth chess this year. Fahad is now placed 12th among the U-12 players in Asia with a rating of 2137.
